Greenberg’s Guide to Lionel Trains: Volume I, Prewar, Standard and 2-7/8” Gauge was published over 17 years ago! Since that time a great deal has been learned about Standard Gauge Lionel trains. This new information greatly pleases me since it is an era I particularly like. Consequently, I decided, with the urging of friends, particularly Clem Clement, to revise and improve the book. The starting place is early Standard Gauge Lionel Steam 5, 51, 6, and 7 and early Lionel Electrics 33, 34, 38, 42, 50, 53, 54, 1910, 1911 and 1912. The best way to proceed is to systematically gather data on as many pieces as possible. Clem and I planned our first study group.
On January 14, 2012 eighteen collectors met to systematically gather data about Standard Gauge early steam engines. We reviewed about 35 engines. The meeting place was my home in Alexandria, Virginia. We used an extensive questionnaire to review each engine and asked teams of two collectors to work together to describe each locomotive. We also photographed each engine. The collectors reported that they enjoyed this study process and learned much more about their trains. Tinplate Times reported on the study session previously. Our next study session is Sunday March 4, 2012 from 10 am to 4 pm at my home in Alexandria, Virginia. We will study early Lionel Electrics 33, 34, 38, 50, 53, 54, 1910, 1911 and 1912.

The following pages are the draft report of some of our January 14th findings. The pages show four of the five major periods of Lionel No. 5 development. We need photos for period 4. The data shows the rapid evolution and changes in Lionel production in its early years. In fact the early production is more interesting to study because of the rapidity and visibility of the mechanical changes.
